Hush descended on Platform 12 as those present observed two minutes silence in honour of the military personnel who have lost their lives whilst serving their country.
Stuart Kay, Chairman of the Royal British Legion – Crewe Branch, and Virgin Trains’ Station Manager Sheila Breeze then unveiled a new commemorative livery on one of Virgin Trains’ Pendolinos. Aptly named Virgin Hero, the 125mph train will carry both the Poppy logo and a message on each cab to remember those who fell during World War I in particular.
“2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the First World War,” commented Virgin Trains Interim Director of Communications Jim Rowe, “so we felt it only right to mark this year’s Armistice Day and do our little bit to help support the vital work of the Royal British Legion.”
The train, which will see service along the length and breadth of the West Coast Main Line from London to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow will carry the message throughout 2014.
“It’s a wonderful gesture from Virgin Trains,” added Stuart Kay. “Whilst a lot of time and effort is focused on our annual Poppy Appeal, the work of the Royal British Legion takes place all year round and never more so than in 2014. So to have one of their flagship trains, which will be seen by millions of their customers, carrying our logo and the ‘We Will Remember Them’ message is great news.”
