From September 27, the fee for visa on arrival in Thailand, enjoyed by citizens of 18 countries around the world, will double from 1,000 to 2,000 baht. Among the 18 countries are: China, India, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia.
Media reports suggests that the decision to implement a 100% increase was based on the belief that the current charge is lower than the visa fees paid by Thai tourists visiting other countries.
Following the recent terror attacks in several resort areas, Thailand’s tourism authorities are working hard to encourage international travellers not to cancel their trips to the kingdom. This new visa fare might not be beneficial to the tourism industry in the wake of the recent events.
The other countries offered visa-on-arrival to Thailand are Bulgaria, Bhutan, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Romania, San Marino, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
The Foreign Ministry said in its announcement that the decision to hike the charge for this class of visa was based on what Thai embassies and consulates-general are collecting, to make the fee more comparable to what Thais pay when they travel to other countries.
