VisitScotland: Recipe widget to boost Perthshire tourism experience

Published on : Thursday, February 4, 2016

tourism experiencePerth based online-zine site, Small City, Big Personality has launched a new recipe widget that perfectly bridges Scotland’s year of Food and Drink in 2015 and the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design in 2016.

Their #SmallCityRecipe widget will allow self-catering accommodation providers, local chefs, delis, butchers and other food retail outlets to link-up and showcase the best of Perthshire and wider Scotland’s seasonal, local produce.

The widget will be offered free of charge to accommodation providers for use on their websites, and will give weekly updated recipes featuring ideas for using seasonal produce from the local area and ingredients available from Perthshire’s independent food retailers. The hope is that self-catering visitors to the area will find an easy route to ‘buy local, eat local’ while on holiday.

David Smythe, Chairman of Perthshire Tourism Partnership commented, “The weekly Small City Recipe widget is an ideal download to add to self-catering websites, and it is very easy to do. It not only provides changing content for our members but the recipes themselves are attractive to visitors who are booking self-catering accommodation and planning meals. The recipes come with a helpful guide to sourcing local Perthshire ingredients.”

Developed by the Small City team, Nicola Martin and Anna Ford, the recipe widget has been heralded as a perfect link between Scotland’s year of Food and Drink in 2015 and the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design in 2016. Using digital technology, original images from local photographer, Gill Murray, and recipes from local chefs and their own kitchens, they have cleverly linked together the local food and drink chain.

Nicola Martin, Small City owner said, “Our weekly recipes are really popular and we know from talking to tourism and food businesses that they were keen to find a way for us to get this great information in front of visitors.

Anna Ford of Atholl Road Digital, our web developer, came up with the idea of a widget and we took it from there. We’re really pleased Visit Scotland and Perthshire Tourism Partnership have supported the rollout of our project and we’re looking forward to seeing the free widget appear on websites across the area.”

Jim Clarkson, Regional Partnerships Director (East of Scotland) from Visit Scotland was at the launch held at Provender Brown in Perth’s George Street.

He commented: “This innovative approach to showcasing Perthshire’s amazing natural larder is very much in keeping with the spirit of the Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

Digital tools such as these enable visitors to access and share more information and experiences than ever before. We are therefore delighted to be supporting Small City and the rollout of the #SmallCityRecipe widget.”

From the retail perspective Diane Brown of Provender Brown was enthusiastic to be involved: “We were delighted to be invited to take part in the launch and I am really encouraged to see initiatives that aim to link visitors to the area with Independent businesses. Food plays such a big part in the tourism experience and so much precious holiday time can be wasted trying to source the right ingredients and restaurants. This is a great idea for our digital age.”
