From tomorrow (Friday), surfing’s top 36 men and top 18 women will compete at Surfers Point in Prevelly for honours and vital international ranking points in the elite Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour.
One of only 11 events on the world championship tour, the 2016 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro will feature defending champions Courtney Conlogue and Adriano de Souza alongside the sport’s other biggest names including Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, Filipe Toledo and Sally Fitzgibbons.
The State Government has been a proud sponsor of the award-winning competition for more than 30 years through Tourism WA and, more recently, Royalties for Regions.
Excellent conditions at last year’s event saw viewer numbers skyrocket across the world, with 1.8 million hours of online videos watched – a 128 per cent increase from the previous year. Social media engagement also soared through 168 million Facebook impressions with a total reach of more than 54 million people, while 26 Instagram posts attracted almost one million ‘likes’.
The Drug Aware Margaret River Pro also won the Major Festivals and Events gold medal at the 2015 Perth Airport Western Australian Tourism Awards for the second year running.
