Zimbabwe tourism minister Walter Mzembi appealed the editors to assist him in marketing Zimbabwe to the international community. He said that the country has failed to achieve this task because of its spoiled image. Mzembi pleaded with editors in Harare on his Brand Zimbabwe initiative.
He said that Zimbabwe’s bad governance history made him lose the contest for the UNWTO Secretary-General position. He lost in the second round after getting impressive votes in the first round.
Mzembi said that the media should help him in rebuilding the image of Zimbabwe by publicizing that “there is no dictatorship” in the country. Zimbabwe suffered a bad image at the turn of the millennium after the government embarked on a controversial land distribution programme. To quote Minister Mzembi, “We do not sell to the world the fact that religiously we hold elections every five years, and people out there think that there is dictatorship here under a constitutional democracy and yet there is an opposition that governs with us because they are part of the governance architecture.”
