Conducting athletic events, the county has had good success rate in drawing visitors, and will keep on working that market, as explained by Dan Spedden, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
On Tuesday, Spedden told again the Board of County Commissioners that a national fall lacrosse tournament will take place from Oct. 28-29 in the County and the lacrosse festival by now under contract for upcoming 2018.
The lacrosse tournament, using fields at North Hagerstown High School, Saint James School and the Hagerstown soccer complex at Grace Academy, has the chance to lure over 13,000 visitors, as informed by Spedden.
He also mentioned that the USA Cycling National Road Amateur Championship will take place in the forthcoming month of July 2018. Tourism officials are expecting that the event books up to 3,000 hotel nights.
Spedden offered the yearly tourism update to the commissioners on Tuesday. Over 1.248 million people visited the county in the fiscal year 2016-17, investing an estimated $263.3 million in the community.
Roughly 27 percent of that was invested on food and beverages with approximately 22 percent on retail.
Around 18.5 percent in transportation while lodging occupied the fourth spot at 15 percent of spending, or about $39 million.
From July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017, lodging-tax revenue totaled $2,019,543.14. This was the third consecutive year that lodging-tax revenue surpassed $2 million, although that total is quite lesser than each of the previous two years.
