With monsoon receding, a pink wave of water lilies has made its way up the backwater villages of Kottayam, attracting tourists in huge numbers.

Official estimates suggest that close to 15,000 people have visited Malarikkal over the past 10 days to catch the breathtaking view of the sun rising and setting over a sea of water lily bloom.

Besides Malarikkal, visitors have also swarmed the polder banks in the adjoining villages blanketed by the bloom.

The local tourism sector is abuzz with queries from tourists wanting to holiday among these flowers.

Confirming the growing global appeal of the natural show, K. Anil Kumar, convenor of the Meenchilar-Meenantharayaar-Kodooraar River Linking Programme, said the ideal time to see the flowers is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. The flowers have become a must-have backdrop for photos on social media with people increasingly using this stunning pink vista for selfies, family and wedding photo-shoots.

The visitor influx this season has been so unprecedented that people of Ambattukavu, where the bloom is under way, has established a locally owned tourism enterprise, according to Mr. Anil Kumar.

“To begin with, a two-day tourism festival Ambal Vasantham (Waterlily bloom) will be staged where by the visitors will be offered boat rides through the flowers, besides other water-tourism related activities. There are no restrictions on plucking these flowers as will anyway wither away within a week with the onset of the farming season,” he added.

Aimed at integrating the natural splendour with local tourism, the River Linking Initiative has drawn up new plans to manage the crowds from the next season onwards.
