A WestJet flight from Calgary to Ottawa made an emergency landing in Regina after crew members detected smoke in the flight deck. The incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. Saturday.
Mark Ramsay was a passenger on flight 610 and said that everything seemed fine before the landing; the crew was handing out snacks and drinks like normal – until the plane banked for a turn.
In a Twitter message Ramsay said that, at first he thought the flight is avoiding some bad weather, but the cabin crew was preparing for landing procedure.
The flight landed without incident and all passengers were unharmed and removed safely.
The Regina Police Service said the cause was determined to be a mechanical issue that was quickly handled by the airport’s fire department.
Passengers were transferred to alternate flights to resume their travels.
While Ramsay described the flight’s atmosphere as quiet and nerve-racking, he said the landing was as smooth as any other.
Regina Airport Authority president and CEO Dick Graham said 128 people were on board WestJet flight 610.
