Whanganui is growing as a desirable destination amongst the tourists. The figures of the latest night visitors spent in the city has risen for the fourth month in a row, and New Zealanders are increasingly seeing it as a desirable place to visit.
According to the latest Statistics New Zealand data, the guests’ number rose to 13 per cent in the May month itself.
Lyn Cheyne from Whanganui and Partners said this was a result of work to promote the city. They said that the work was done over the past three years and is starting to pay off as people now think about it as a destination.
The council-controlled organisation was established in 2014 to improve economic development. The Visit Whanganui, Business Whanganui and Education Whanganui come under the Whanganui and Partners banner.
The Statistics New Zealand figures showing an increase in guest nights measured only hotels, motels, backpackers and holiday parks.
Ms Cheyne said that as well as that an increasing number of people were staying in Airbnb accommodation and campervans.
Whanganui and Partners’ data showed the number of nights spent in holiday houses, baches, bed and breakfasts and Airbnb accommodation was about three times the number of nights spent in commercial accommodation.
A national perceptions survey organised by the Whanganui District Council showed a change in many Kiwis’ attitudes to Whanganui. The number of tourists in New Zealand considering visiting Whanganui as a tourist jumped from 35 per cent in 2015 to 48 per cent this year.
