Many villages in the heart of Canada’s oil sands region have been reduced to ashes affecting thousands of homes in the northeast Alberta town.
The winds are strong and helping in spreading the fire which has now been directed towards the local airport. The webcam images show smoke engulfing the airport. The airport hotel in the north terminal has also caught fire.
Evacuation orders have been issued to Anzac, Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray First Nation communities located about 50 km south of Fort McMurray.
The fire has charred 18,500 acres (7,500 hectares) since it started and firefighters have been unable to douse the fire since then. Clouds of black smoke covered about 60 km (37 miles) away from the northeastern Alberta. Roads were jammed after evacuation order was given. Stretches of highway were converted to campgrounds which were cramped with cars, trucks and recreation vehicle.
There is possibility of losing a large portion of the town feels Scott Long, an official with Alberta. More than 80 percent of the houses in the neighborhood a total of 600 houses were destroyed.
