Tohoku365 has just opened up the first round of its new competition, offering one lucky winner the chance to spend thirty days travelling around Tohoku, Japan on a “quest for the most heavenly food in the galaxy” with prize money of one million yen.
Tohoku, in the north of Japan’s main island of Honshu, is made up of six divergent prefectures, each home to treasures close to Japan’s heart – such as the entrancing snow monsters at Zao Onsen, the sacred three mountains of the Dewa Sanzan in Yamagata, or the Nebuta Festival in Aomori, where enormous, decorated lantern floats are paraded through the night-time streets, casting a warming glow over exuberant festival-goers and revealing the myths and legends behind Japan’s alluring culture.
Unknown to many travellers, the series of competitions launched by Tohoku365 will allow overseas travellers to discover more of the attractions found in this area of Honshu. Each competition will focus on a particular theme, such as sake, cherry blossom, hot springs or, in the case of this first prize trip, the delicious local cuisine. The winner will traverse Tohoku’s six prefectures, hunting down the unique dishes that are intrinsic to this area of Japan, with the cost of travel paid for by the one million yen (around £6171) prize money. From wanko soba to kiritampo nabe, through to the various ramen flavours created specifically in this region, this gastronomical tour of Japan will leave both the winner and their readers drooling for more.
