For the second year in a row, passenger traffic at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport reached record levels. While seat capacity is down on some routes, the airport welcomed 3,778,035 passengers in 2015, growth of nearly 3% over the prior year.
“Momentum is building in the Winnipeg market, as evidenced by the solid growth in our passenger numbers for the second consecutive year,” said Barry Rempel, President and CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority. “We are encouraged to see a growing number of people flying to and from Winnipeg. It is particularly helpful in our efforts with air carriers to increase capacity on existing routes and in attracting new destinations to better serve our community.”
During 2015, all major carriers made selective changes to capacity on many routes in order to meet demand. In addition, new seasonal flights to Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Mexico were added by Sunwing, a carrier that has been growing services from Winnipeg in recent years.
Looking ahead to 2016, travellers will enjoy added connectivity with the introduction of WestJet’s seasonal direct service to London, England beginning May 2016.
