The magazine, which has more than 1.6m subscribers in the US alone, is renowned for its world rankings and has just released its individual country rankings for 2016, placing the 27-hole, Robert Trent Jones Jnr facility a very impressive third in Portugal – and second on the country’s mainland.
Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort reopened only in 2011 following an extensive redesign by Trent Jones Jnr. The three loops of nine holes – the Alvor, Lagos and Praia courses – enjoy expansive panoramic views across the Bay of Lagos, with each lay-out offering a different kind of golfing challenge in a glorious and natural environment.
The resort’s operations director, António Pinto Coelho, believes the latest accolade comes at a very exciting time for the resort.
He said: “It’s a brilliant way to start the new year – and 2016 was already going to be a big year for us with the opening of our new hotel. Golf Digest is probably the most widely read golf publication in the world and its rankings are respected the world over. It’s a real feather in our cap to be recognised as the third-best course in Portugal – ranked above many big-name venues – and the number one in the western Algarve.
“As always though, we won’t be satisfied until we have achieved top spot as we have in other rankings. That has always to be our ambition. That will never change.”
It’s a fabulous start to a year that will see the opening of the five-star, 20-room, boutique Onyria Palmares Beach House Hotel, currently under construction alongside the multi-award-winning course. The hotel – the first in the resort – will overlook both the 18th green and the practice area, just a short distance from the beach, and will also provide hospitality services to villa owners at the destination, such as concierge, housekeeping and food and beverage.
The Golf Digest honour follows a successful 2015 which saw Onyria Palmares Beach & Golf Resort named Portugal’s best golf course for the fourth successive year in a domestic poll and also ranked 21 in Golf World’s benchmark Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe 2015/16.
