It also shows that Yorkshire is the third top destination in the UK for international travellers – ahead of places like Cornwall, Devon and the Scottish Highlands.
The news follows Yorkshire being named third best region in the world to visit in 2014 by Lonely Planet and in the top 10 destinations to visit by AOL.
A thriving tourism economy and the arrival of the Tour de France in Yorkshire next July have all helped catapult the county into the premier league of destinations.
Alison Copus, VP Marketing at TripAdvisor for Business, said: “Overall, interest in UK destinations is on the rise, and not just to the traditional holiday hotspots on the coast or in the capital. The UK’s inland countryside is thriving too, with Yorkshire and the Scottish Highlands both holding a place in the top five destinations for international travellers.”
Alistair Griffin, Yorkshire singer/songwriter and Yorkshire Patron, welcomed the news and said: “I think the rest of the country – and the world – are really starting to get what Yorkshire is all about and see it for themselves. Stunning natural beauty, great food and amazing culture all make it hard not to love.”
Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “This is yet more great news for our wonderful county and our tourism businesses, villages, towns and cities. Make no mistake, the world is waking up to Yorkshire and we are delighted to see the county continue to grow in exposure.”
