The skis were out in Yorkshire this bank holiday weekend as a local airport has lowered the temperature to set the scene for its new skiing route to Chambery which takes off later this year (December 17).
Steve Gill, Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s chief executive, surprised passengers who were heading out for some summer sun by bringing skis and a young Olympic hopeful freestyle skier, Mason Flannery, to the terminal to officially launch the airports links to European ski resorts.
Mason, from Doncaster, who is 14, who has been skiing since he was five years old currently competes across Europe and will be using the route when it opens later in the year.
Steve Gill, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer a number of routes to popular skiing destinations from Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Our Flybe route to Chambery, the gateway to Alpine ski resorts, starts in less than three months and our new route with WizzAir to Cluj in Romania started a few weeks ago alongside existing routes to Sofia and Turin, Italy.
“For too long skiers like Mason have had to leave the region first to pursue their active breaks but now we have a range of options for them to fly out locally.
“Given its proximity to Mont Blanc, Chambery offers Yorkshire winter sports enthusiasts’ easy access to some of the finest slopes and facilities the world has to offer.
“Our WizzAir destinations also provide access to extremely popular ski resorts in Romania and Bulgaria.”
Chambery in the Rhone-Alps region of south eastern France is one of a number of routes announced by Flybe for their winter programme from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Mason Flannery said “It was good fun to see people’s faces as we got our skis out in the terminal. These routes are great for skiers and I’m looking forward to travelling on the Chambery flight when it starts.”
Flights will start just in time for Christmas from December 17 2016, flying once a week on Saturdays going on sale from today (March 31) with one way fares available for booking at www.flybe.com from £44.99 including taxes and charges. Other winter programme destinations include Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Dublin, Faro, Malaga, Alicante and Jersey.
“Being able to offer winter sports destinations as part of our winter programme is a great addition to our offer to customers alongside traditional getaway favourites like Alicante, Faro and Malaga,” added Steve.
Savoie Mont Blanc boasts some 17 areas, over 110 resorts and 4,800 km of slopes offering a range of holidays for all abilities. It includes the world famous Courchevel les Ménuires, Méribel and Val Thorens resorts which are just over 60 miles away from the airport. Chambery offers wider tourism options being next to Lake Bourget, offering breath taking views through many walking routes as well a historical and culturally focussed city centre.
