Mike Lee

An interview with Mike Lee, the Vice President of Sales for Marina Bay Sands. Enhancing aspects of MICE, Business and Leisure Tourism and special focus on revenue responsibility, he joined Marina Bay Sands in November 2010. With over 35 years of hotel marketing, sales and developmental experience, he has set dynamic standards in the hotel industry.

Travel And Tour World – The architecture is splendid, what are some of the expansion plans that Marina Bay Sands has that will continue to enhance visitor experience?

Mike Lee :
Marina Bay Sands is always assessing the demands of our customers to find out how we can deliver an even stronger product, as well as ensure we constantly present a refreshing experience for both new and repeat visitors.


Expansion of luxury shopping options
We are seeing a very positive momentum and growth in our retail segment. With growing interest and demand from premium luxury brands to expand their presence at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, we will see many luxury duplex stores being completed in 2014. Many of these brands, such as Bulgari, Cartier, Dior, MiuMiu and Versace, will have their largest stores in Singapore at The Shoppes upon completion.


Enhanced culinary experience
In 2015, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay will join the ranks of other international chefs on-board Marina Bay Sands’ unrivalled celebrity chef programme that includes Mario Batali, Daniel Boulud, Wolfgang
Puck, Tetsuya Wakuda, Justin Quek and David Thompson. Gordon Ramsay will be launching his successful Bread Street Kitchen concept at Marina Bay Sands.

Also opening in early 2015 is award-winning Los Angeles chef and restaurateur David Myers’ new concept restaurant. Edgy, vibrant, and dynamic, the restaurant will be curated to the very last detail by Myers, pairing modern ingredients with a handcrafted outlook at the intersection where California and Asia collide.

Also set to open at Marina Bay Sands in Q4 this year is Long Chim by internationally acclaimed chef, restaurateur and cookbook author David Thompson. Long Chim will be Thompson’s first venture into a more casual and relaxed style serving authentic Thai food that can are popular on the streets of Bangkok.

 

 

 

 

Travel And Tour World – Marina Bay Sands is an individual tourism experience in Singapore offering not only excellent stay facilities along with world class culinary spread and high end shopping and entertainment amenities. Which are your top five markets and which category of guests do they fall under?

Mike Lee : We see a diverse group of visitors staying at our hotel. They include leisure and business travellers, locals who are on staycations as well as honeymooners.Our top five foreign markets for the hotel in 2013 are Japan, China, Indonesia, Korea and Australia.

 

 

Travel And Tour World: Marina Bay is known to be a luxury hotel, so how is the hotel catering to the mid –tier guests?

Mike Lee :
As Singapore’s biggest hotel, Marina Bay Sands boasts some 2,561 luxury rooms and suites spread across three 55-storey towers. There are a total of 15 room and suite types and over 100 different room design configurations that caters to the needs and interests of different travellers.

 

 

Travel And Tour World: How many meetings can be organized together at Marina Bay Sands??

Mike Lee :
As one of Asia’s leading business venues, Marina Bay Sands is capable of hosting intimate meetings as well as large-scale tradeshows and conferences. Our extensive and dynamic spaces give our MICE customers the flexibility to create an event tailored to meet their specific requirements


The Sands Expo and Convention Centre offers more than 120,000 square metres (1.3 million square feet) of meeting space with 250 meeting rooms and the capacity for 2,000 exhibition booths. This makes it one of the largest and most flexible locations in Asia. The Sands Expo and Convention Centre can host up to 45,000 delegates at any one time. We also have the largest ballroom in Southeast Asia that can host up to 11,000 delegates theatre-style or 6,600 banquet styles.

In addition to the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, there are also a variety of creative and unique event venues found across the property that are set for more intimate, small to medium-sized functions.


These venues include:

• Sands SkyPark for cocktail parties or intimate dinner receptions
• Theatres for product launches, movie premieres, presentations or conferences
• Five celebrity chef restaurants for cocktail parties, dinner receptions, dine-arounds or exclusive launches
• The iconic lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum for opening ceremonies, keynote addresses or cocktail parties
• 16 plush Hospitality suites in the hotel

 

 

 

Travel And Tour World: What kind of sustainable practices do you usually plan for MICE events? What special sustainable practices are being incorporated for ITB Asia 2014 to make you a trendy green meeting leader in the MICE industry?

Mike Lee :
As the first MICE facility in Southeast Asia to obtain the ISO 20121 Sustainable Events Management System certification, we champion sustainable event planning under our Sands ECO360o Green Meetings to help organisers achieve their green meeting goals. This certification makes certain that all our meetings are green to begin with. It also demonstrates our commitment to align all our operational processes and procedures according to the ISO standards. This not only helps in improving our service level and but increases our overall operational efficiency. More importantly, it empowers us to influence our partners to improve their environmental impact.


ITB Asia will be adopting several key sustainable practices under Marina Bay Sands ECO360°. They include:


a. Green Harvest Menus – provides sustainable F&B options, reduce Food Miles and lower the emission of greenhouse gases during transportation


b. Sands ECO360° Event Impact Statement – provides a post-event sustainability report that captures an event’s sustainability highlights and energy consumption at a glance

c. Waste management – recycling bins and sustainably disposing of leftover food and materials.

Travel And Tour World: Singapore is counted among the leading meeting city in the world. How do you envisage its development as a global leader in hosting meetings and convention by 2020?

Mike Lee :
Singapore’s international appeal, strategic location, and access to key Asian markets continue to provide a strong impetus for event organisers to host their events in the city. The city state also offers abundant opportunities for meeting planners to interact and share best practices.
The Singapore government is constantly improves existing infrastructure to meet the needs of the MICE industry to ensure that the facilities remain relevant and competitive. In February this year, the government announced that it has set aside S$1 billion for the Tourism Development Fund to help boost the sector in Singapore.
Singapore continues to establish thought leadership by attracting new and compelling content in first-to- Singapore and Asia events. Marina Bay Sands continues to be an attractive destination for event planners looking for the right partner to host their events in Singapore for the first time. Since the start of 2014, Marina Bay Sands has already confirmed 15 new-to-Singapore shows. These shows include art and design fair Maison& Objet Asia, security conference series Blackhat Asia as well as the Milan Image Art Fair, which will make its debut in October.
