Travel And Tour World: Tell us about the feeling that World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has recognised the efforts of the Maldives for global safety travel protocols

Mr Thoyyib Mohamed: “We are delighted to have been recognised by The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) for our hard work and efforts in implementing enhanced health and safety measures across the Maldives. This recognition highlights the lengths we have gone to in creating a safe, gradual plan by rebuilding confidence among travellers and ensuring a coordinated approach in restarting our Tourism industry. Our goal is to allow travellers to visit our country confidently and to ensure visitors of the enhanced standards of hygiene in place, and that they can once again experience ‘Safe Travels’. “

Travel And Tour World: What are the safety guidelines you are maintaining for safe travels?

Mr Thoyyib Mohamed: “Safety is the destinations top priority and already an impressive 94% of resorts in the Maldives have re-opened for business, and several liveaboards have resumed operation as well, all in line with the comprehensive COVID-19 safe tourism guidelines and hygiene certification programme issued by the Maldivian Ministry of Tourism in June 2020. We have also resumed operations for guesthouses as of 15th October. All resorts and guesthouses situated in the island nation are required to take protective measures, ensuring the safety of tourists and staff working in the industry. We are ready and looking forward to welcoming back UK holidaymakers to our beautiful country.”

Travel And Tour World: What are the marketing strategies you have taken in post COVID-19 travel time?

Mr Thoyyib Mohamed: “It is no question that the Maldives is a world-class holiday destination, well-known for its white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. However, we also want to assure UK holidaymakers that the Maldives is a ‘safe haven’ and one of the most ideal destinations for tourists during a pandemic environment, with the launch of our ‘Rediscover Maldives… the sunny side of life campaign’. Along with the Maldives’ one- island-one-resort concept and abundant choice of private villa facilities, the geography of the country means the Maldives is the ideal destination for guests who are keen to avoid crowds during their holiday this year. We have therefore just launched an outdoor advertising campaign on 3rd October in London to promote the destination as a haven for long- haul travellers thanks to these unique features.”

Travel And Tour World: How the convention bureau and tourism dept. are working to offer a safe a best travel- both in leisure and MICE

Mr Thoyyib Mohamed: “The UK is one of our most important inbound tourism markets so, with the Maldives High Commission in the United Kingdom and the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, discussions are underway to ease the travel restrictions for travellers from the UK. During a virtual ceremony held to mark World Tourism Day 2020, the Minister of Tourism Honorable Abdulla Mausoom launched the ‘Maldives Border Miles’ program aimed to boost tourism in the Maldives. As the first initiative of its kind in the world, ‘Maldives Border Miles’ is a three-tiered loyalty program for tourists to earn points based on their number of visits to the Maldives and the duration of their stay in the nation to encourage visitors to our incredible nation.”
