Eleven people have been killed and a further five injured after gunmen went on a rampage at a hotel and two bars in Mexico.

The horrifying scenes happened at the Gala hotel and in two bars in the Lindavista neighbourhood, in the city of Celaya – north west of Mexico City.

The attacks started at about 10pm local time on Monday night.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene as locals say more than 30 gunshots were heard.

A group of armed men wearing hoods arrived in two trucks, a news chanel reports.

Witnesses told local news that about 15 men launched the attack at the hotel and nearby bar.

The attacks allegedly burned the front of two businesses with homemade bombs before fleeing the scene.

The suspects left a card with an alleged message referring to organised crime groups, local news reports.

10 people died at the scene and one died of their injuries in hospital.

The identities of those who died are not known at this time, but local news says two men and two women died in the hotel, and five women and one man died in the bar.

Witnesses who hid in the hotel said the attack only lasted a minute.

Hours before the attack, police had found a bag of at least three dismembered bodies, local news reports. It is unclear who was behind the attack.

Authorities say the area is known to the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, a gang dedicated to stealing fuel.

Their leader was recently captured and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel claimed the area, sparking an increase in violence.
