Turkey has stepped up efforts to stop the illegal migrants to reach Europe and during the first eight months of this year, 235,000 illegal migrants were intercepted.

The overwhelming influx of migrants from Asia and Africa led to the the General directorate of Migration Management, an Interior Ministry department which announced that there was  new increase in the number of illegal migrants trying to reach Europe.

For the migrants feeling civil wars, conflicts and poverty from Asia and Africa finds Turkey to be ideal which bridges Europe and Asia and shares border with EU members Bulgaria and Greece.

Europe takes reluctantly fewer migrants every year seeking a better life in Europe. However, some countries like Germany show generosity towards those migrants seeking shelter but EU countries remain at odds on which countries should take more migrants.

It was revealed by the officials that the number of intercepted migrants increased by 42% between January and Augusts as compared to the same period last year standing at 158, 235.

By the joint and separate efforts of police, gendarme units and Turkish Coast Guard on land and at sea the number of ‘successful ‘ crossings and deaths was curbed.

In the first eight months of 2018 the number of illegal migrants who reached EU countries via land crossing was 10,000 but this year it dropped to 4,000.

The number of people reaching Europe by sea was 18,000 in the first eight months of 2018  which rose to 24,000 this year.

Edirine, a northwestern province bordering Greece had the highest portion of illegal migrants and according to the migration authority one in every three illegal migrants in Turkey was intercepted in Edirine around 68,000 migrants out of 235,000 were stopped here as compared to the same period last year. The interception rate increased by 70%.
