In the first five months of this year, international tourism has shown a significant amount of return with almost 250 million international arrivals. The data is from the recent UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

In the period from January to May 2021, over 77 million arrivals are recorded, this indicates the sector has recovered almost half. The amount is 46 per cent of the pre-pandemic era.

Secretary General of UNWTO, Zurab Pololikashvili commented that tourism recovery has increased the pace in many parts of the world. He also stated that the tourism sector is developing fast despite the many challenges it has.

In addition, he advised handling the economical problems and geo-political hurdles that are prevalent in the position.

He further stated that Europe welcomed more than four times international arrivals in the last five months which is +350 per cent. He also believed that this happened due to additional border restriction removal.

Europe saw particularly strong demand in April at +458 per cent. This reflects on the Easter schedule. Meanwhile, America saw a hike of about +112 per cent from international tourists. This growth is particularly good as the early months of 2021 have not been that promising. The arrivals remained just 36% compared to 2019 in Europe and 40% for America.

Among this, UNWTO published optimistic data showing that international travel has increased to between 40-70% from the pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The data from all types of These scenarios broken down by region reveal that Europe and the Americas will record the best tourism results in 2022. Asia and the Pacific might not be that successful to achieve that amount of tourists as they still have restrictive border rules. However, international tourist arrivals in Europe might rise to 65% per cent or 80 per cent of 2019 levels in 2022. The American international travel van rises to 80%.
