29 killed in Italy’s flooding, high winds and lightning strikes wreaks havoc

The country’s interior minister said that the death toll in Italy’s historic flooding has gone up to 29. The Interiors Minister Matteo Salvini mentioned that twelve were dead in Sicily while having dinner and were swept up by the water.

 

 

The Fire Brigade tweeted that nine of the people were members of two families dining together when the house was submerged by water when a nearby river overflowed suddenly.

 

 

The divers could find the body and among the victims were two children , 1 and 3 years old.

 

 

A doctor who has been on his way to work at a hospital Saturday night was now missing as per the Civil Protection Agency.

 

 

Over the past week high winds and heavy rains devastated parts of the country leading to worst flooding in at least a decade in Venice . There has been damages of more than 1 billion euros ($1.14 billion) in Veneto and villages have cut off due to landslides.

 

 

 

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said  that the situation in Sicily was dramatic  and he called a cabinet meeting to announce a state of emergency in affected regions.

 

 

 

The situation has been monitored by Italy’s Civil Protection Agency and weather warning has been issued via twitter. Volunteers from the Italian Red Cross work to rescue people.

 

 

Most of the deaths caused last week was due to strong winds of 190 kilometers per hour (118 mph) toppling acres of woodland that included the famous ‘Violin Forest’.

 

 

In the south of Rome when a tree hit the car two young people died and another death too place by a falling tree while walking in Naples.

 

 

 

 

Roberto Ciambetti, president of the Veneto Regional Council said that around 300,000 trees were flattened after winds swept through the Val d’Assa in the Asiago plateau.

 

 

 

Strong winds on Monday drove the high tide to one of the highest levels ever recorded and almost all of Venice was under strong winds on Monday.

 

 

 

Floodwater spilled across the ancient marble floors of St. Mark’s Basilica and St.Mark’s Square became a lake.

 

 

The marble pavement in front of the alter of the Madonna Nicopeia, a 12th-century icon was submerged by floodwaters along with the Baptistery and the Zen Chapel.
