3 dead, 8 injured, 48 stuck in cable car mishap in Indian pilgrimage destination Deoghar

Two women have died while 8 are injured after some cable cars on a ropeway collided with each other at Trikut Hills close to Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar district of Jharkhand in India on Sunday, reports a news media.

Teams of Indian Army, Indian Air Force, ITBP, and NDRF have been deployed for the rescue operation.

Two Mi-17 helicopters are involved in the rescue operation of people still stuck in the cabins on the ropeway, Indian Air Force official said, reports a news agency, adding that the rescue operation is still underway.

An official said that prima facie, the incident appeared to have occurred due to some technical fault resulting in collision of cable cars adding that the exact cause is yet to be ascertained.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was already deployed at the spot for the rescue operations, Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri had said adding that the local villagers were also assisting the team.

Meanwhile, Godda MP Nishikant Dubey said that he has briefed about the situation to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jharkhand Chief Secretary Sukhdeo Singh and has also requested deployment of NDRF teams.

As per Jharkhand Tourism, the Trikut ropeway is India’s highest vertical ropeway with a maximum lens angle of 44 degrees.

The ropeway, situated around 20 km from Baba Baidyanath Temple, is around 766-metres-long, while the hill is 392-metres-high.

There are 25 cabins in the ropeway. Four people can sit in each cabin.
