4.3 earthquake tremors hit south-east Portugal

lisbonLisbon and a number of towns on the southeast coast of Portugal has shaken to 4.3 earthquake.

 

Its epicentre was 23 miles north-west of Lisbon and the estimated population in the area which felt the tremors is around 3.5 million people.

 

There are no immediate report of any death, injury or structural damage. The residents took it to the social media where they estimated that the quake lasted for four and 10 seconds.

 

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) shared updates on its twitter page from the people who experienced the tremors in Leiria, Foz do Arelho, Loures, Costa Caparica and Sintra.

 

A tragic incident occurred in 1755 earthquake which devastated the city. it was almost six minute long and was followed by tsunami which caused the death of about ten thousand people in Lisbon itself. It also destroyed about 85% of the city’s buildings. Seismologists estimate it had a magnitude in the range of 8.5 to 9, making it one of the deadliest in history.
