When the Mid-South hospitality market has suffered because of the COVID-19 pandemic, that hasn’t stopped hotel openings from taking place this year.

One of the most recent is a 61-room Days Inn & Suites by Wyndham hotel at 7150 Sutton Place in Horn Lake, which opened for guests on September 24, 2020.

The $4 million, 32,000-square-foot hotel is located off I-55, about eight miles from Memphis International Airport and 15 miles from Downtown Memphis, said Nicky Tarchala, director of sales for Days Inn & Suites by Wyndham Horn Lake. She said the city located in DeSoto County has grown over the past several years.

Tarchala said the virus did not cause any construction delays. She noted two of the rooms feature kitchenettes or small cooking areas geared towards extended-stay travelers and two other rooms feature jacuzzi suites.

Since opening, the hotel’s pool has remained closed — due to the pandemic. Tarchala said once the weather warms up the grill area will be available for those who want to cook outdoors.

Days Inn & Suites is looking to hire about 20 employees to work at the hotel as business improves, Tarchala said. She explained the hotel is at about 50% occupancy so far in December, which is slightly above Memphis’ hotel occupancy rate of 47%. Nationally, for December, the occupancy rate for hotels is 36%.
