A tourist from Spain has been killed by a falling stone fragment in one of the Italy’s busiest city, Florence. The tourist was 52 years old hailing from Barcelona.
The stone from the church, said to have supported a column, had a diameter of 15cm (six inches) and fell 20 meters (65ft).
The Police have closed the Santa Croce Basilica, where the artist Michelangelo, astronomer Galileo and philosopher Machiavelli are buried, to tourist visits until further notice.
A church representative said she was “stunned” and “distraught”, and offered condolences to the victim’s family. Irene Sanesi, the president of the Opera di Santa Croce, which runs the church that the maintenance of the church had been carried out constantly in recent years.
This is one of the most important Franciscan churches in the city of Florence, Italy and a major tourism destination in the Europe.
