7.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Fiji

fijiA powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Fiji and according to the data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) the deep earthquake struck 377 miles under the surface.

 

 

At a depth of 668 km it hit 123 km south east of Suva and according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center there was no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami expected. The earthquake was located too deep inside the earth.

 

 

Further, the New Zealand’s Ministry of Civil Defense and Emergency Management announced of no tsunami threat to New  Zealand.

 

 

Initially the earthquake was registered as an 8.1 magnitude by USGS but it later went down to a 7.8.

 

 

Fiji is located on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’ which is a 25,000 mile-long area and  known for 90 percent of the world’s earthquake take place.

 

 

The earthquake struck at 3.49 am local time  as per the reports. So far Fiji and Tonga have been impacted. Suva is the main cultural and tourist centre of the Fiji Islands.
