According to Kara Hitchens from AAA, this year’s Memorial Day weekend is anticipated to be one of the busiest holiday weekends in about two decades, with a projected increase in American travellers.

Approximately 42.3 million individuals are expected to embark on trips, marking a 7% surge compared to the previous year. Hitchens emphasizes that the number of travelers this year has risen by 2.7 million, showcasing a positive rebound from the impact of COVID-19 shutdowns.

An interesting trend noted by Hitchens is the extension of the weekend into longer vacations, as individuals combine their weekends with additional vacation days.

This shift implies a greater amount of time spent away from the office and an increased desire to travel. Hitchens predicts that this trend will persist and travel will continue to thrive, with anticipated growth in numbers for holidays such as the Fourth of July, Labour Day, and even into the fall season.

The pandemic appears to have influenced people to prioritize creating cherished memories and spending quality time with loved ones.

Hitchens suggests that the realization of the importance of such moments during the pandemic has led to a surge in travel enthusiasm.

AAA has actively encouraged individuals to plan their vacations in advance to ensure that they take the time off and make the most of these opportunities.

While driving remains the most popular mode of transportation, AAA has observed a notable increase in “other” travel options, including buses, trains, and cruise ships, with a 20% rise in comparison to the previous year. Despite challenges in the airline industry, such as high prices, cancellations, and delays, flights are still projected to be approximately 11% busier than in 2022.

Overall, the Memorial Day weekend sets the stage for a promising resurgence of travel, reflecting a growing desire among Americans to explore, make lasting memories, and prioritize quality time with their loved ones.
