Abu Dhabi has taken the spotlight as the most sought-after luxury travel destination for US travelers in 2026, according to data released by travel insurance provider Travel Guard. The UAE capital saw an astonishing 421% surge in Google search interest, marking the highest year-on-year growth worldwide, a remarkable achievement that left its competitors far behind. The city outpaced other luxurious destinations like Acapulco in Mexico, which claimed second place with a 253% increase in search queries.
This growing interest in Abu Dhabi underscores a broader trend in global luxury tourism. As one of the two Middle Eastern destinations to make the top 10, Abu Dhabi is redefining its role on the world’s luxury tourism map, alongside Aswan in Egypt, which ranked seventh.
Abu Dhabi’s rise to the top can be attributed to its unique combination of cultural landmarks, world-class infrastructure, and outdoor adventures. Iconic attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi, soon to be joined by the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, highlight the city’s commitment to the arts. Additionally, the city’s cultural heritage sites, including the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Qasr Al Hosn fort, offer a glimpse into the region’s rich past. For thrill-seekers, the city’s world-renowned Formula 1 season finale and desert safaris provide an exciting blend of adrenaline and luxury.
The city’s appeal has only grown, with visitation numbers reaching new heights. The first half of 2025 saw more than four million visitors to its cultural and heritage sites, marking a 47% increase compared to the previous year. Furthermore, hotel occupancy soared to 80%, while the Abu Dhabi Airports reported a 13.1% increase in passenger numbers, with a total of 15.8 million travelers. The city’s international appeal has been further bolstered by the record-breaking 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which saw 339,000 fans flocking to the event.

Once considered a quieter counterpart to Dubai, Abu Dhabi is now asserting its identity as a luxury tourism hub. The city’s global presence has expanded significantly, as seen by its recent recognition as the world’s most desirable Christmas destination for UK travelers. Interest in the city surged by 91% during the last quarter of 2025, reflecting the broader shift in travelers’ preferences towards less traditional destinations.
This growing profile is also evident in the hotel sector. Even during the traditionally quieter summer months of 2025, Abu Dhabi saw impressive results, with 2.04 million hotel guests staying in the city. Additionally, destinations like Yas Island and Saadiyat Island reported a 50% increase in international arrivals, further solidifying the emirate’s position as a leading global destination.

Abu Dhabi’s appeal is further enhanced by its reputation for safety. It has been ranked as the world’s safest city for nine consecutive years in Numbeo’s Safety Index, and Travelbag named it the safest destination for solo travelers. These accolades have helped foster a sense of security, attracting visitors from across the globe who are looking for both luxury and peace of mind.
The opening of cultural institutions such as the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi in recent years has added to the city’s allure. The much-anticipated Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is set to further cement the city’s status as the cultural capital of the region.
Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself for even greater growth. Under its Tourism Strategy 2030, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) aims to welcome 39.3 million visitors by 2030, contributing AED 90 billion to the local economy. Partnerships with global travel giants such as Expedia Group, Amadeus, and WebBeds will continue to elevate the city’s profile in key tourism markets, ensuring that Abu Dhabi remains at the forefront of luxury travel for years to come.
As travelers seek new, exclusive experiences, Abu Dhabi stands ready to offer them, blending cultural richness, world-class luxury, and unforgettable adventures in one stunning destination.
