From 18th April, American Airlines has announced that it will start serving alcohol on its flights once more. As the various American airlines companies and other organisations start to following the relaxation of the US federal mask mandate, the airlines companies are resuming to serve alcohol on flights.

American, Southwest and Delta were amongst the several who banned the sale of alcohol on its flights during 2021. This was done following the surge in the number of unruly passenger incidents during the pandemic. easyJet and KLM in Europe and Virgin Australia also had banned the sale of alcohol in the aircrafts.

American was left as the last alcohol-free airline left, after even the Southwest Airlines reinstated alcohol sales on its flights in February. In the recent months, American had removed the alcohol from the economy class trolleys, but had kept it in the first class cabin. Spirits such as gin, rum, vodka and whiskey – as well as wine – will cost $9 (£6.85), while beers will be priced at $8 (£6).

During the pandemic, the incidents regarding disruptive passengers had skyrocketed. The Federal Aviation Administration, had reported that in 2021, there were 5,981 reports of unruly passengers on US airlines. Among these incidents, 4,290 were mask-related. In response to these incidents, many domestic airliners like the Delta had called for a nationwide “no-fly” list, which would ban unruly passengers across all airlines after an offence on one.
