Since March 2020, New Zealand has welcomed its first international tourists as part of the phased reopening decision of the government. Now, visitors from 60 visa-waiver countries like the US and UK, can enter after two years of close downs and the consequent implementation of some of the stringent contra pandemic protocols of the world.

The first flights landed from Los Angeles and San Francisco, an emotional scene at Auckland airport, and arrivals were handed locally made chocolate bars.

Vaccinated travellers will have to produce a negative pre-departure Covid test. They must self-test for coronavirus on arrival. From October this year, non-vaccinated visitors will also be allowed to enter the country, unless decisions are being taken by the government to lift restrictions early.

During COVID-19, New Zealand implemented some of the toughest measures in the world. With the aim to perk up tourism and ease labour shortage, the country has started easing the increasingly unpopular measures. In February and March, 2022, borders were reopened to New Zealanders and Australians.

On an every week basis, over 30,000 people are scheduled to arrive in New Zealand. This would be an increase on numbers all through the pandemic, but well below the levels existed in pre-Covid times, which were close to 25,000 people each day.
