Latvia’s flag carrier airBaltic has decided to decrease its overall capacity between April 15 and October 31, 2020. The decision arrives in light of the coronavirus pandemic as COVID-19 cases continue to soar across the globe. The aviation industry has been one of the worst-hit sectors by the coronavirus. As global travel restrictions and national lockdowns continue, the demand for air travel significantly decreases.

Based on the present situation, airBaltic will now be canceling 50% of its flights. The carrier is currently adjusting its network and flight schedule according to the temporarily reduced fleet. This would help the airline manage its operations once the coronavirus crisis comes to an end and flights are scheduled to resume operations.

Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer, airBaltic said in a recent press statement that the airline has currently planned to gradually restart their operations considering the significant impact on the passenger travel demand. He informed that when the airline gets the opportunity to resume operations it will start with a reduced number of aircraft. Initially, daily flights will be served to the carrier’s top routes. More aircraft, offering more flights, will gradually return to service with each passing week.

Additionally, airBaltic has also made a decision to delay the launch of new routes it had planned for the summer season of 2020. All routes from all three Baltic States will be delayed and a number of additional routes will be discontinued temporarily.

The carrier will also contact passengers who have bookings for the affected flights individually via e-mail. Those passengers will be offered travel alternatives. Currently, airBaltic continues to offer its clients charter passenger and cargo flights on request.
