American Airlines will start flying in and out of Duluth International Airport this summer.

It was announced last week that American Airlines will start a route between Duluth and Chicago O’Hare beginning May 23. There will be two daily flights each way between Duluth and Chicago, with American joining another major carrier, United, to offer a service to the Windy City.

United Airlines runs three daily services to Chicago from Duluth, with the only other major route served out of the city being the five daily flights Delta operates to MSP Airport.

Duluth Airport Executive Director Tom Werner said American’s move to Duluth follows three years of discussion, and noted the airline took into account the airport’s passenger growth in 2018.

The airport serves Duluth’s 85,000-plus residents and the wider Northland area. The latest numbers showed that in the 10 months to the end of October 2018, it had seen a 9.58 percent increase in passengers.
