After the US airlines cancelled flights to mainland China, the growing outbreak of coronavirus has led to further cancellation of flights to Hong Kong.

It was announced by the American Airlines that until February 20 it would pull flights to the southern Chinese city due to weak demand. This weekend United Airlines will be follwoing suit.

Hong Kong with Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth was connected by the American Airlines and United flew from San Francisco to the city.

British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and Qatar Airways – have already axed flights to mainland China amid the flu-like virus outbreak which is known to kill so far about 400 and infected more than thousands.

In a bid to prevent the virus from spreading the US has barred entry to foreigners arriving from mainland China.

Airlines had until now maintained flights to Hong Kong which is a special administrative region of China having different border controls to the mainland.

Earlier this week, Hong Kong has reported its first death from coronavirus and amid weaking demand the city’s flagship airline, Cathay Pacific announced swingeing cuts to its schedules. It includes 90 per cent in capacity to mainland China.

The UK has asked all Britons in China to leave although this does not remain applicable to Hong Kong.
