A group of local youths discovered an ancient cave, around 2 kms from Gangolihat town, in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district. This cave is around 300 meter deep.

Bhupesh Pant, a Gangolihat resident said, “My friend Deepak Rawat was the first to spot the cave in the local forest. However, he didn’t enter the cave as its entrance was narrow. Later, Deepak, two other friends and I went into the cave only to find out that it is wider on the inside. There are marks on the inside walls due to water seeping through for several years. Also, the cave is filled with stalagmite craters.”

Authorities came to know about this cave later on. Harshita Joshi, a professor of Geology at Pithoragarh Degree College, said, “There are many such caves in the area from Gangolihat-Bageshwar to Saur Valley in Pithoragarh.”
LataBisht, district tourism officer, said that the tourism department and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will jointly carry on a survey to see if the cave can be developed into a tourist spot.

A cave circuit, covering 11 caves in Gangolihat area, is already open to tourists. “It isn’t a man-made cave but a natural one. It can surely be developed into a tourist spot,” said Chandra Singh Chauhan, regional archeological officer inAlmora.
