Our world is home to several countries, each with its unique mix of languages, traditions, and cultural events. Planning to travel abroad in April? Excellent! That means you have time to tailor your trip to include a few of the famous festivals around the world.

Keukenhof: A colorful Tulip and Flower Festival

Date : 23rd March – 14th May 2023

 Location: Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Keukenhof is also known as the ‘Garden of Europe’. In the space of eight weeks, more than 500 flower growers and bulb purveyors show off what they have in Amsterdam! The Keukenhof garden dates back to the 15th century. It was previously known as the garden of the Countess Jacqueline of Bavaria. Today it is over 200 hectares and hosts the annual tulip festival.

Paro Tshechu

Date: 2nd to 6th April, 2023

Location: Bhutan

Bhutan is known for its festivals, but its biggest and most popular festival takes place in spring, on the 10th day of the second Bhutanese lunar month ( usually March or April). Paro Tshechu dates back to 1644 when, after the construction of the mighty Paro Dzong (the festival venue), a grand celebration commenced with masked dances, music, and traditional songs.

These days, the festival is in memory of Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. On the fifth and final day, the festival begins with the unwinding of a thangka (embroidered painting seen at all festivals) of Guru Rinpoche on the wall of the Dzong.

It is believed that simply seeing this sacred artwork will cleanse one’s sins. Following the unwinding of a thangka, these are spectacular masked dances that re-enact the eight manifestations of Guru Rinpoche.

Songkran

Date : 13th – 15th April, 2023

Location: Thailand

Known as Songkran Day, the first day of the festival is an exuberant celebration with processions of Buddha images taking place throughout the country. The Thai people also prepare themselves for the beginning of the New Year by cleaning their houses. More importantly, April 13th is when the water-throwing gets going. If you are visiting Thailand during this period, prepare to get splashed! Crowds of people roam around throwing buckets of water, using water pistols, and just generally soaking anyone in the vicinity.

Al Ula Skies Festival

Date : 20th April to 4th May, 2023

Location: Saudi Arabia

There may be bigger Hot Air Balloon Festivals, but AI Ula’s otherworldly landscape makes this event particularly captivating.

During the festival, more than 200 colorful balloons fly over the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the ancient city of Hegra, creating a magical view for those both in the air and on the ground. But that’s not all. The fortnight-long celebration also has immersive events which celebrate the magical desert landscape, including a stargazing experience and more.

Kings Day Festival

Place: Netherlands

Date: April 27th , 2023

King’s Day marks the Dutch monarch’s birthday and is probably the biggest birthday party you will ever celebrate. Because it is an official national holiday in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, it is a day off for most people.

Throughout the country, King’s Day is celebrated with various festivities, such as flea markets and festivals. Streets are decorated with orange and red-white-blue-colored decorations and Dutch flags are hung out with a festive orange pennant. Traditionally, the monarch makes a ceremonial visit to one or more municipalities in the country on this day.

In the past, during the time of Queen Juliana, a parade was held every year. The entire royal family stood on the steps of Soestdijk Palace. People could then walk by in a procession and present gifts. Queen Beatrix chose to go to the people herself, rather than have them come to her.

Since then, the Royal Family visits one or two towns in the Netherlands on King’s Day. The city and surrounding towns can then present themselves festively and characteristically. Most cities do this with a parade, music performances, and contributions from associations and organizations that are rooted in the city or region. The visit on King’s Day is always broadcast live on television by the NOS.

During King’s Day, numerous activities take place throughout the country. This ranges from huge open-air dance events to big flea markets and random parties in the streets.
