Around 80,000 tourists are marooned in Sanya, the popular resort city on China’s tropical Hainan island after the authorities declared lockdown for arresting an outbreak of Covid-19.

Public transportation was on hold with restriction in people’s movements inside the city from early Saturday morning. Tourists who are stuck are required to halt for seven days and clear five Covid-19 tests before they can leave.

Deputy Mayor He Shigang said that around 80,000 tourists are stuck in the city. Tourists currently in Sanya along with those who have been to the city since July 23 were restricted to leave Hainan province after 6p.m. local time on Saturday, said the authorities.

The restraints enforced are during the peak of the summer tourism spell for the island province. This popular destination is often named China’s Hawaii for its high-end hotels, sandy beaches and tropical forests.

More than 80% of flights leaving Sanya were annulled on Saturday, as per reports from flight tracking firm Variflight. All trains leaving from Sanya were also canceled.

Authorities in Sanya accepted the embarrassment caused to tourists and assured that they would do their best to resolve all problems that arise, including reforming travel booking terminations and giving away half-price discounts on hotel stays for all marooned tourists in Sanya.

Sanya has been categorized into high and medium risk zones, with control rules depending on risk level, said the local officials.
