In a bid to promote adventure tourism in the region, the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati, will set up an artificial rock climbing wall under the guidance of the Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA).“An artificial rock climbing wall is all set to be commissioned on the IIE campus here. There has been a rapid rise in the adventure and travel tourism sector. Many people have started businesses in these two sectors in recent times,” said IIE Director Manoj Kr Das.
“With rock climbing being officially included in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the sport is likely to grow from here. This artificial rock climbing wall will provide the platform for various mountaineering associations, enthusiasts and students to conduct training camps.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had approved a package of new events including baseball/softball, karate, skateboarding, climbing and surfing for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Although the city has two such facilities including one on the 4th Assam Police Battalion campus at Kahilipara and a concrete one at Dispur, Das insists the IIE’s artificial rock climbing wall will be a state-of-the-art structure with imported components. “The artificial fibre rock climbing wall here is a-state-of-the-art structure and will be built on a steel superstructure. It has been funded by the North Eastern Council,” Das added.
