On Monday, Cuba reopened schools and its borders to international tourism as opposition groups requested supporters to raise their objection in regards to greater political freedoms, creating a tense situation between the government and its critics on the Caribbean island.

The rebels for months made use of social media for a “Civic March for Change” following July’s street protests, the largest dissent the island witnessed in decades.

The communist government in Cuba had stopped all planned demonstrations on Monday, explaining that they are part of USA’s destabilization campaign, which maintains a Cold War-era embargo on Cuba. U.S. officials have denied that.

Residents reported no major rallies as of midday local time, however dissidents carried on using social media to protest at 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) in 10 cities all over Cuba, starting right from Havana to Pinar del Rio and Guantanamo.

There was a distinguished rise of plain-clothed and uniformed police in the capital city of Havana, even though streets remained quieter than other days as some parents kept their kids at home.

“I decided to keep my 6-year-old home from his first day at school because I was worried that something might happen,” state worker Jennifer Puyol Vendesia said.

A Facebook group called Archipielago, has planned for a demonstrations on Sunday, which has led the call for protests, fizzled out.

On Sunday, Government supporters had encircled the home of a playwright and Archipielago leader in Havana named Yunior Garcia. That stopped him from marching alone, as he had planned, to draw support for peaceful marches.
