Assam tourism hot spot Sivasagar braces for thunderstorms as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Guwahati has issued an urgent forecast predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rain in specific areas of Assam. Over the next three hours, residents of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, and Tinsukia should prepare for adverse weather conditions.
This alert has been released in the public interest by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), urging citizens to take necessary precautions. The IMD’s warning underscores the need for vigilance, especially considering the potential hazards posed by lightning and sudden downpours.

Assam has witnessed a whopping increase in tourist footfalls, with domestic tourists rising by 573% and foreign tourists by 783% in 2023. In Sivasagar alone, a total of 7,11,243 tourists visited during the 2023-24 period, including 7,09,857 Indian and 1,386 foreign tourists. This significant surge highlights Assam’s growing popularity as a travel destination, drawing in a diverse array of visitors from both within the country and abroad.
Residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather conditions improve. By taking these precautions, the potential risks associated with thunderstorms and lightning can be minimized, ensuring safety for all.
