Assam tourism yields good profits contributing maximum revenue every year between October and May. Still, in the last two year, the sector has lost thousands of crores.
Regardless of witnessing some major progress in the last few years, it got paralyzed by different crises time to time. Back in 2019, in Assam, due to citizenship amendment act, tourism season got tremendously affected by the premature stoppage of tourists in December.
Countrywide lockdown happened just few months later due to pandemic. After dealing with the first wave, the sector saw some hope with rise in domestic tourism. But the second wave actually placed the last nail in the coffin of Assam tourism with massive lockdown and restrictions.
The report published by the Assam government says that loss of over Rs. 1500 crore has been experienced in May 2020. It also said that constant lockdown may cause huge unemployment and bankruptcy of small units.
