The United Kingdom has recently joined a growing list of countries imposing entry fees on Australian travelers, signaling a significant shift in international travel requirements. According to recent announcements, the UK will require Australians to pay a fee to enter its borders starting early next year. Launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme

Previously, the UK had implemented the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme late last year, which initially applied only to travelers from specific Middle Eastern countries. The scheme, now expanded, will include a broad range of nations, with Australia being one of the new additions. The ETA scheme is designed to streamline entry procedures and bolster security by utilizing advanced technology.

According to official sources, the ETA application process will commence on November 27, but the new fee requirement will only come into effect for travel to the UK starting January 8 next year. The cost of the ETA is set at £10, which equates to approximately AUD $19.60. This fee will be applicable to all travelers from the included nations, including Australians.

Seema Malhotra, the UK’s Minister for Migration and Citizenship, highlighted that the expansion of the ETA scheme underscores the UK’s commitment to improving security through technological advancements and a modernized immigration system. Travelers can apply for an ETA through the UK government’s mobile app or website. Each individual entering the UK, including children and infants, will be required to obtain an ETA. However, Ireland will be exempt from this system.

Travelers from these countries will be able to apply for an ETA starting March 5, 2025, for entry into the UK from April 2, 2025.

The UK’s ETA scheme bears similarities to the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which was announced earlier this year. The ETIAS will require Australians to pay a fee of about $11.50 for an authorization valid for three years or until their passport expires. Thirty EU countries will implement the ETIAS, though travelers under 18 and those over 70 will be exempt from the fee.

In addition to the UK and EU changes, Japan is also preparing to introduce a new entry system. This system will require international travelers, including Australians, to complete an outline form before entering the country. Although the cost has not yet been confirmed, the Japanese government has announced that this system will be rolled out in 2030.
