Sydney Airport is set to experience its busiest festive season yet, with a forecast of 5.84 million passengers traveling through all terminals between December 12, 2025, and January 26, 2026. This represents a 3 percent increase in passenger traffic compared to the same period last year, driven by a surge in both international and domestic travel. The airport is preparing to handle this influx by enhancing operations, increasing staffing, and implementing a variety of upgrades to improve passenger flow during the peak travel period.
A significant milestone in this year’s holiday forecast is the anticipated increase in international travel. Approximately 2.70 million passengers are expected to pass through Sydney Airport’s T1 International Terminal, setting a new benchmark for international traffic. This is an impressive 6.5 percent rise from last year, which saw a record 2.53 million international passengers. This surge in international travel reflects strong demand across key markets, including New Zealand, China, the United States, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates. With the continued popularity of these destinations, the airport is working diligently to ensure smooth operations as millions of passengers head abroad or return home for the holidays.
On the domestic front, Sydney Airport is also preparing for a substantial volume of passengers. Around 3.14 million domestic travelers are expected to pass through the T2 and T3 Domestic Terminals. The busiest domestic travel day is anticipated to be Friday, December 12, with more than 80,500 passengers expected to fly within Australia. This will coincide with the beginning of the summer vacation period in Australia, which traditionally sees high demand for domestic flights as Australians head to popular destinations.
For both international and domestic travel, certain days are expected to see particularly high passenger volumes. The peak day for domestic travel will occur on Friday, December 12, with over 80,500 passengers anticipated. International travel will hit its peak on Saturday, January 3, 2026, when more than 65,000 international travelers are expected to pass through the airport. Passengers are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for check-in and security procedures to avoid any stress on these high-volume days.
As the holiday season approaches, Sydney Airport is advising passengers to plan ahead to ensure a smooth travel experience. Domestic passengers traveling with only hand luggage are advised to arrive one hour before their flight’s departure, while those checking in bags should arrive two hours prior. For international travelers, it is recommended to arrive three hours before their flight’s departure, unless their airline provides specific guidance suggesting otherwise. This extra time will help passengers navigate the increased security and check-in processes expected during this busy time.
In addition to the recommendations for earlier arrivals, travelers are urged to stay updated on real-time information. Sydney Airport’s website offers updates on kerbside wait times and flight status, which can help passengers adjust their plans if there are any delays or disruptions. To avoid unnecessary parking hassles, early bookings for parking spaces are strongly encouraged, as spots may fill up quickly during peak periods.

In preparation for the peak season, Sydney Airport has completed several significant upgrades to enhance the passenger experience. These upgrades are designed to improve efficiency and reduce delays, allowing travelers to move through the airport more quickly and comfortably.
At T1 International Terminal, 15 new security screening lanes have been completed, equipped with the latest security technology. These upgrades are designed to ensure that passengers can move through security efficiently, with the goal of processing most travelers in under 10 minutes. This will help minimize delays and reduce the pressure on passengers, particularly during the busiest travel days.
At T2 Domestic Terminal, six out of seven new security lanes are now operational, equipped with technology that allows passengers to keep their laptops and aerosols in their bags, speeding up the screening process. Additionally, six of the sixteen new automatic bag drops will be operational by the end of the year, along with two new lifts and two new escalators post-security. These changes are part of Sydney Airport’s efforts to get passengers from kerb to gate in 15 minutes.
At T3 Domestic Terminal, there has been a revamp of food and beverage offerings, with Maggio’s, Slim’s Quality Burgers, Icebergs, RaRa Ramen, and Lou Lou among the new brands that have opened. These additions aim to improve the overall airport experience for travelers, especially during the busy holiday season.
Behind the scenes, Sydney Airport has also upgraded its baggage screening technology, which processes more bags per hour, and improved the bussing and transfer systems to streamline operations across the airport. While these improvements are expected to reduce congestion, passengers are still advised to allow extra time to reach their gates and prepare for the possibility of longer lines during peak periods.
As millions of Australians and international travelers make their way through Sydney Airport this holiday season, certain destinations are expected to see a notable increase in passengers. New Zealand remains the top international destination for Australian travelers, with a 19 percent increase in passengers expected to travel across the Tasman Sea to visit family and friends. The United Arab Emirates will see an 11 percent increase, with many passengers traveling to Dubai and beyond. China is also forecast to see a 6.5 percent increase, supported by additional services during the holiday period, including expanded flights from China Southern between Sydney and Guangzhou.
Domestically, cities like Melbourne, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast are expected to see the highest volumes of travelers, with additional demand anticipated for Adelaide and Hobart as well.
As Sydney Airport prepares for its busiest festive season ever, passengers are encouraged to plan their travels carefully to avoid the stress of navigating a crowded airport. With more passengers than ever expected to pass through the terminals, early preparation will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey. From checking in online to arriving early and utilizing the airport’s upgraded services, travelers can take steps to avoid delays and ensure they have a pleasant start to their holiday.
