Barcelona Tourism Observatory has become part of UNWTO’s Barcelona Tourism Observatory in order to help the tourism sector move forward towards greater sustainability.

Barcelona is among most favourite tourism destinations in Europe while this sector accounts for ten per cent of local GDP.

The recent decision will also help Barcelona recover from the damages caused by the Coronavirus and its new strains and also deal with a large number of international visitors.

The President of the Executive Committee of Turisme de Barcelona, Eduard Torres, stressed that the recent decision emphasizes the importance of Barcelona’s international role in the tourism industry.

Being part of the network will help the Barcelona City Council to make data-based decisions in order to achieve the goals of managing the visitor economy in frames of sustainability of local economy as well as increasing the return and benefits to citizens, according to Councillor for Tourism and Creative Industries of the City Hall of Barcelona, Xavier Marcé.

Regarding the issue, the President of the Barcelona Provincial Council, Núria Marín,  stressed the need to link the city of Barcelona with the rest of the province of Barcelona under the concept of Destination Barcelona to analyze the wider reality of tourism activity.

The International Network of Sustainable Observatories was created in order to support the improvement of sustainability in the tourism industry.

European countries’ authorities are continuously attempting to find new ways in order to help future sustainable tourism.

Previously, authorities in many countries worldwide held a meeting to discuss new ways that would help invest in the travel and tourism industry’s sustainable future.

The summit was held in November in London, while it welcomed many leaders, entrepreneurs and experts from the World Travel & Tourism Council and World Travel Market (WTM), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

Regarding the issue previously, the Council of the European Union called on the EU Commission and the Member States to present a mutual European Agenda for Tourism 2030/2050 to help the green tourism ecosystem in Europe.
