Beach goers at Colva are witnessing loads of garbage

Beach goers at Colva are getting to witness loads of garbage filled plastic bags stockpiled on land possessed by the Goa tourism department.

The beach cleaning agency appointed by the government has been trained by the Goa tourism department to make use of this space for loading the waste that will be transported afterwards to the treatment plant, said a tourism official.

Dry waste like nets, plastic, in addition to cloth leftover entangled in nets are collected and kept in plastic bags at the location for transportation. Karnataka Commercial and Industrial Corporation (KCIC) is the agency in charge of beach cleaning procedures.

Along with the above, seaweed and unwanted sandbags are also being discarded at the site.

The land connects the adjacent children’s park where huge erosion has devastated two gazebos and few ornamental electrical lamps.

An official associated with beach cleaning said that there is a constraint regarding taking rejected nets at the treatment plant. The official said that these nets need to be cut into smaller fragments. Only then these are taken in by the plant.

Hence, the workers in their free time cut the nets, separate other waste from it and then carry the material.

From the time of the beginning of the monsoon, record numbers of seaweed washed away onto land all through the seaside belt. Labor forces were collecting nearly 400 bags each day. Despite that, the treatment plant does not receive them; hence, they need to be stored in that area. With time, it degenerates. Huge amounts of tree wood have also eroded onto land this rainy season. These are taken to the chosen area close to the treatment plant at Saligao.
