Decks are being cleared for providing the much-awaited refurbishment to Bhavani Island on the banks of Krishna River in Vijayawada. The Andhra government is considering an ambitious plan to modernize the island into a major tourist destination by assimilating six other islands nearby.
Life is gradually coming back to the island which was closed for public in July this year due to floods engulfing parts of it. The island was reopened to the public of late, but repairs are still going on for the play and entertainment equipment that was spoiled in the flood waters.
A short ferry trip from Punnami ghat, the scenic island on the river, thought to be a cherished feature of Andhra Pradesh tourism, has remained a ‘not fully explored’ lagoon with huge opportunity for improvement. It is a luxurious green 270-hectare stretch having opulent bio-diversity of local flora and an exceptional riparian eco-system, being home to many species of birds.
With the island in continued inattention, the government, via the Bhavani Island Tourism Corporation (BITC), spent Rs. 50 crores for constructing CC roads and pathways, installing lights and creating landscaping. The island now has selfie points, wall gardens, floral clock, maze garden, along with a multi-media gaming zone, a robotic Jurassic Park, a mirror maze among various other attractions for kids and adults.
There are also plans like museum, Bird Park and amphitheaters for music performances and plays.
