Biak Numfor District in Papua has been chosen by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy as one of the 19 priority locations to receive a Special Allocation Fund (DAK) for tourism in 2023.

Head of the Biak Tourist Office, Onny Dangeubun announced at the Coordination Meeting of the Agrarian Reform Task Force in Biak Numfor, Papua, on Tuesday, September 20, 2022 that the Biak tourism flagship programme is a national priority and will receive a special allocation for tourism.

Lake Toba, Bukittinggi, Bangka Belitung, Batam-Bintan, Ujung Kulon-Halimun-Pangandaran, Borobudur, Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, and Banyuwangi were among the 19 priority locations mentioned by Dangeubun.

These also include the tourism areas of Sambas-Singkawang, Derawan-Berau, Toraja-Makassar-Selayar, Bali, Lombok-Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Wakatobi, Manado-Likupang, Morotai, Raja Ampat, and Biak-Cenderawasih Bay.

After Biak was designated as a key destination, Dangeubun anticipates that local indigenous people will support regional tourist growth.

Conjointly, he urged all parties to maintain better coordination and cooperation in support of the national tourist initiative.

Accessibility entails all kinds of infrastructure and transportation that provide connectivity to the destination, and amenities refer to any auxiliary services that can accommodate visitors’ needs.

Attractions are things that tourists can see and participate in at their destination, Dangeubun stresses.

The Japanese Cave of Binsari, Wonderland, waterfalls, Catalina Diving Tours, beach tours, traditional arts and culture tours, and World War II treasures are just a few of the popular tourist attractions in Biak.

The prominence of these locations in the country’s tourism industry, the presence of six UNESCO Geoparks, and a number of legal and regulatory requirements were all taken into consideration by the ministry while determining the 19 priority locations.

In 2023, a total of Rp583.3 billion was allocated nationally just for tourism. Subsequently, Biak is being transformed into a Pacific maritime gateway for international trade.
