Western Europe has experienced complex travel disruptions due to new significant winter weather phenomena that cause snow and sub-zero temperatures which have led to cancellations and delays of flights in large airports in Europe. Millions of people have been affected in all major airports including: Amsterdam’s Schiphol, Paris’ Charles De Gaulle, and London Heathrow. In addition, Eurostar London-Paris train services have been affected as well.
Amsterdam Schiphol has been one of the hardest hit airports in Europe. On Wednesday, they had to cancel over 700 flights. Operations have been further complicated by the Dutch national airline KLM having problems due to a shortage of De-icing fluid. French weather also caused the cancellation of over 100 flights at Charles De Gaulle and 40 at Orly as authorities requested other airlines to reduce services by 40\% to help mitigate the impacts of the poor weather.

As the extreme weather continues to sweep through the continent, at least six people have tragically lost their lives in weather-related incidents. Five of the fatalities occurred in France, where the freezing conditions and icy roads caused numerous accidents. One person was also killed in Bosnia’s capital, Sarajevo, where 40 cm (16 inches) of snow blanketed the city.
In northern France, the situation worsened as heavy snow and black ice gripped much of the country. The weather triggered widespread disruption, with authorities implementing road bans for lorries in some areas. French officials issued warnings of further hazards as snow and ice continued to affect the nation’s infrastructure. Despite these risks, some drivers chose to brave the conditions, including Carle Bruno, who described waiting at a roadside service station in Le Havre as a safer option than continuing his journey through the treacherous roads.

Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest transport hubs, has faced major disruptions as the snowstorm continues to affect operations. KLM, the Netherlands’ national airline, warned that Schiphol could run out of de-icing fluid due to the extended period of freezing conditions. This created a backlog of hundreds of stranded passengers, with more than 1,000 travellers forced to spend the night in the airport.
Stephan Donker, a spokesperson for KLM, described the situation at Schiphol as “exceptional.” Temporary measures were put in place to accommodate affected passengers, with several hundred beds provided at the airport, along with food and drinks. However, Donker cautioned that further delays and cancellations could occur in the coming days due to the ongoing weather conditions.

In Paris, the rare sight of the city blanketed in snow drew tourists and locals alike out onto the streets to enjoy the winter wonderland. Montmartre, one of Paris’ most iconic districts, became a popular spot for impromptu skiing as visitors reveled in the snow-covered landscape. Similarly, tourists flocked to the Champs de Mars gardens beneath the Eiffel Tower to take in the snow, with many capturing the picturesque scene on their cameras.
Parisian resident Pierre described the scene as “magnificent,” while noting that the snow had brought an unexpected sense of joy to the city. “It’s exceptional, it’s incredible,” Pierre said, adding that many tourists were thrilled to experience a snowy Paris, something they hadn’t expected during their visit.

Yet, beneath the beauty of the snowy Parisian streets, the weather caused significant disruptions. Eurostar services between London and Paris were delayed or cancelled on Wednesday, making it increasingly difficult for travellers to move between the two cities. These delays have compounded the ongoing travel chaos, stranding thousands of people across Europe.
As the big freeze continued to spread across Western Europe, Eurostar services were heavily disrupted. Dozens of trains between London and Paris were delayed or cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions. The snowstorm also disrupted haulage services, leading to delays in the transportation of goods across borders. The significant delays in both passenger and freight transport have had ripple effects on the regional economy, particularly in countries that rely on quick transport for imports and exports.
The authorities in multiple countries, including the UK, France, and the Netherlands, have been urging travellers to monitor weather conditions and travel updates closely. Passengers are advised to check their flight and train statuses before heading to the airport or train station, as further cancellations and delays are likely in the coming days.
The tragic toll of this severe weather event has been significant. In France, five fatalities have been reported due to accidents caused by treacherous driving conditions. The heavy snowfall and icy roads have created hazardous travel conditions, particularly in the northern regions of the country. Similarly, in Bosnia, a woman was killed as a result of the snowstorm in Sarajevo. As the death toll rises, authorities have urged residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
The freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions have made life increasingly difficult for many people, including those who are homeless. Boubacar Camara, a Guinean teenager sleeping rough on the outskirts of Paris, spoke of the challenges of surviving in the extreme cold, saying, “You just have to stay strong and make sure you don’t die.”
As Europe braces for more snow and ice in the coming days, the big freeze is expected to continue causing significant disruptions to transport and daily life. With airports and railways struggling to cope with the conditions, and fatalities mounting due to the hazardous weather, the coming days could prove even more difficult for those trying to travel or cope with the freezing temperatures. Authorities across Western Europe are working to minimize the impact of the weather, but travellers are advised to prepare for continued delays and disruptions as the situation develops.
Table of Disruptions Across Western Europe:Location Affected Service Cancellations/Delays Notes Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam Flights 700+ cancelled De-icing fluid shortage, 1,000+ passengers stranded Charles de Gaulle, Paris Flights 100+ cancelled 40% flight reduction due to freezing conditions Heathrow Airport, London Flights Dozens delayed or cancelled Weather-related delays, continued disruptions Eurostar (London-Paris) Train services Multiple cancellations and delays Delays due to icy tracks and snow France (nationwide) Haulage services Disrupted Lorry bans, road closures, hazardous driving conditions Bosnia (Sarajevo) Road transport Fatalities 40 cm of snow, one fatality due to weather-related accident
