Eleven people have been killed after an attack on three churches by suicide bombers on Sunday as reported by a leading news media channel.
This incident is the deadliest attack in the last few years to hit the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. Media reports have revealed that one family was behind all these three attacks. A mother and her children had blown themselves up at one church while the father and his two sons had targeted two others.
These attacks had taken place within few minutes of each other in what seems to have been a pre-planned event.
It occurred in Surabaya that is the second biggest city of Indonesia, located in East Java. The assailants included suicide and probably vehicle bombings, especially a motorcycle for executing their attacks.
One of the affected churches was the Santa Maria Catholic Church where one of the attackers were killed when his bomb detonated. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the intelligence agency of Indonesia has previously suspected an Islamic Ste-inspired group by the name of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah and not the Islamic State itself.
The local police have stated that eleven people were left dead by the incident and 40 were wounded including policemen and currently they are in hospitals.
Churches in other cities like Bandung were guarded by police during Mass. Police bomb experts gave hurried to disarm active explosives at Pentacostal Church of Surabaya as reported by the media.
Though the nation is majority Muslim in its population, there is an important population of Buddhists, Christians and Hindus.
