Border reopening isn’t sufficient, says Moroccan Tourism Operators

For years, the tourism operators of Morocco have expressed their displeasure related to the measures of the government to “save” and reform the sector. The ongoing crisis of COVID for them has just uncovered the long time structural problem obstructing the advancement of Moroccan tourism.


On January 12, 2020, the World Health Organization reassured the then new and strange virus, COVID-19. Until March 2, 2020, Morocco wasn’t impacted by it when the Ministry of Health of the country reported the first two COVID-19 cases.


After this declaration, the authorities introduced lockdown, stopping mobility and virus spread.


American think tank, Brookings, on December 2020, estimated in Morocco a loss of 581,000 jobs during the third quarter of 2020, adding that five million workers in the informal economy of the country which had by then lost their jobs due to pandemic.


Victims of a never-ending pandemic
Tourism operators, including hotel, inns, travel agency professionals, as well as independent travel agents, consider themselves the main victims of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.


With livelihood dependent on the mobility of people, the reinforcement of the lockdown and emergency was chiefly shocking news for their economic activities.
