Botswana bags global spot in sports tourism

Over the last two decades, sports tourism is gaining ground globally and the Botswana government has decided to exploit this trend.

By hosting events like the African Youth Games, the Botswana Open, and the Diacore Gaborone Marathon, Botswana has bagged a bright spot on the African and global sports tourism map.

Arguably, the most popular and lucrative sporting event hosted by the Botswana Tourism Organization is the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race. The TDR has been held successively for over 35 years and it has become a must do!

Established in 1975, the race covers 1000 kms of pure Kalahari Desert sand. The event plays a major role in boosting tourism in the country as well as providing numerous opportunities for small scale entrepreneurs.
